We are already sixteen days into 2018 and I’ve finished one book. This time last year I believe I had five or six under my belt. My priorities are different at the moment. Being unemployed has given me a lot of time to do other things – job-hunt, write, start this blog, teach more dance classes, attend more yoga classes – but it hasn’t trickled over into the reading area. I know that if I don’t schedule my days with other things I need to work on, I would laze around and read books 24/7. There’s nothing wrong with that! But unfortunately, my bills won’t pay themselves.
So for National Hot Tea Month, I was inspired to try something new. The cupcake you see in the picture is a family recipe called Blue Monday Cake (which would have been appropriate for yesterday given it was Blue Monday!). It’s a chocolate cake but the icing was my adventure. I used a loose-leaf black tea blend called Chocolate Orange Mousse with a basic butter icing. The black flecks you see are the result of a not-so-fine grind of the tea blend. I added about a tablespoon’s worth of the tea mixture to the icing. It wasn’t as strong as I would have liked it, and truthfully I should have cut down on the confectioner’s sugar, but overall it’s a great sweet pick-me-up on a coldish day.
The teacup is an heirloom from my mother’s side of the family. These are some of the books on my TBR pile; currently working my way through Bohemians, Bootleggers, Flappers & Swells. Look for an upcoming post about this one! I hope to make it through the Ted Bishop book, and possibly Roxanna Gay’s as well. Fifteen more days left in this month, and I aim to finish at least seven books so I can stay on track to hit my yearly goal of eighty books.
